The First Dedicated Passenger Vehicle for Persons of Reduced Mobility (PRM) launched at Heathrow Terminal 5

(March, 2008) Heathrow Terminal 5, in collaboration with Bradshaw, has announced the development and launch of the AV6, the first-ever dedicated passenger vehicle designed specifically for persons of reduced mobility (PRM).  This marks a major step forward in transportation safety, comfort, and accessibility within airport terminals.

For decades, transportation of PRM in airports relied heavily on golf-style buggies, a solution that, while functional, posed significant safety challenges in confined terminal spaces. Recognising this pressing issue, Bradshaw's Specialist Project Division worked closely with airport stakeholders to create a vehicle that better fulfils the needs of PRMs while addressing the risks inherent in traditional travel systems. The AV6 is now set to redefine mobility for PRMs—starting with Heathrow's premier Terminal 5.

A Safer, Smarter Solution for PRM Transport

Designed with five essential criteria: safety, ease of access, comfort, compactness, and low-pressure contact points, the AV6 is equipped to provide passengers with the levels of safety and comfort previously unavailable from other PRM vehicles.

  • Enhanced Safety: Passengers are securely enclosed with soft-coated door extrusions, full-height side panels, and discreetly positioned handles to prevent accidental door openings. Door sensors ensure the vehicle halts automatically if any door is opened in mid-operation.
  • Comfort: The AV6 accommodates up to five passengers and a driver, offering padded bench seats, ample legroom (even for those in full leg casts), and seat belts with head protection. Its car-style driving system guarantees a smooth and effortless ride.
  • Ease of Access: Low step height, double-hinged 180° opening side doors, and a full-opening rear door with grab handles ensure seamless entry for all passengers, including wheelchair users.
  • Compact and Easy to Manoeuvre: Tailored for airport environments, the AV6's compact dimensions allow it to fit into lifts and manoeuvre easily in tight spaces, significantly reducing the risks of damage or injury.
  • Low-Pressure Contact Points: Engineered with airport flooring in mind, the weight distribution of the AV6 minimises wear and damage to floor tiles and surfaces.

Shaping the Future of PRM Transport

With the AV6, Bradshaw has addressed a critical gap in accessible transportation. According to the team behind its development, the vehicle offers PRM passengers the same level of ease and reliability as other travellers, removing barriers to mobility in bustling hubs like Heathrow.

"Golf buggies have served us well for many years, but they're simply not suited to the highly demanding and confined environments of modern airport terminals," said [Drew Bradshaw], [Joint Managing Director at Bradshaw. "The launch of the AV6 is a pivotal moment for PRM transportation; it represents our commitment to safety, comfort, and inclusivity."

A Commitment to Excellence at Heathrow Terminal 5

The introduction of the AV6 comes at a time of increasing pressure for improvement in PRM-related services. Terminal 5's decision to adopt this cutting-edge solution is reflective of its dedication to passenger safety and experience. Heathrow has set a new benchmark for global airports, encouraging others to prioritise innovative and inclusive transport solutions in the years to come.
