New Regulations for Food Waste Collection
Under new legislation, waste collection authorities in England are required to organise weekly food waste collections for recycling or composting from households. For non-household municipal premises, there is a requirement to separately collect and present food waste for recycling but without the necessity for weekly collections.
Household Food Waste Collection
By March 31, 2026, all households in England, including apartments, must have access to weekly food waste collection services. Exceptions to this date are allowed if there are existing long-term waste disposal contracts. This timeline aligns with the rollout date for household dry recycling to ensure a seamless transition and minimize confusion.
The government will provide financial support to local authorities to cover the costs associated with implementing these new services, including initial setup and ongoing operational expenses.
